The Washington Capitals have made a big splash in the NHL draft by selecting two players who have been highly touted in recent years.

First up is goaltender Michael Leighton, who is expected to be taken in the first round.

The Capitals have also taken forward Jake Virtanen, who played last season for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.

Virtanen is 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds.

He has been a standout on the U.S. U18 World Junior Team and was selected by the Capitals in the second round (No. 23 overall) of the 2017 draft.

He also has been selected by Team Canada at the World Juniors.

Virtanin has been in the top 10 of most recent NHL Draft mock drafts.

He is expected at least to get a look from the Capitals at the NHL Draft.

The Caps had three players chosen in the third round of the draft last year.

One of them was defenseman Anthony Cirelli, who was the No. 1 overall pick by the Buffalo Sabres.

The other two were goalie and forward Michael Lehner and defenseman Sam Reinhart.

Cirelli was the fourth overall pick in the 2015 draft and Reinhart was the second overall pick (No, 42 overall).

Reinhart played in 20 games for the Capitals last season and posted a 1.92 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage.

The Sabres traded Lehner to the Chicago Blackhawks for a third-round pick in 2018 and a conditional 2019 second-round selection.

The Sabres sent Reinhart to the Capitals for a second-rounder in 2020.

Both of the players who went to the Blackhawks have made significant strides in their draft careers.

Lehner led the league in goals against average at 2.04 and shutouts at 11.

The NHL has seen an uptick in goalies drafted in the draft over the past decade.

The number of goalies taken in a given draft has gone from five to 15 in the last decade.
